hello, actors, and greetings from los angeles!

on my down time here, i thought i’d go through some headshots and voice over demos that were piling up on my desk back in nyc – specifically ones that were from a NYC AFTRA open door we had at the recording studio over at Phantom Audio. that was a little over two months ago, and i’m finally getting the chance to listen to the demos and review the pictures and resumes now. yes, when things get crazy, it can take up to that amount of time – or longer – for an agent or a casting director to get back to you, so don’t lose faith, you may just get some feedback after all…

after sorting through all the headshots – and listening to all of the demos – and writing my comments and suggestions for both – this is what i realized, and i’ll list my gripes in order of frustration:

1. even though these NYC actors all had some great credits on their resumes, a lot of their headshots were either blurry, still black and white, or just plain boring.

2. not everyone had a vo demo, but were coming to audition and IMPRESS upon the fact that they were working vo artists… not good, peeps. (only two of them let me know they wanted to get into doing vo’s. those peeps i applaud.)

3. MOST of the demos i listened to were…either very old and dated, poorly recorded/produced, or just plain boring with no range. only three out of 20 something stood out… yikes…

4. 2 demos didn’t even play – it was just a bunch of digital noise blasting at me when i hit the play button…. ya GOTTA check your cd’s on a player, folks – NOT a computer – to make sure they will play on anything!!!!

5. (and this was my biggest pet peeve) many did not have an EMAIL ADDRESS!!!!! wha?????? i couldn’t believe it. only numbers… come on, folks. get with it! honestly, you should all have your own websites at this point, let alone an email address where we can contact you when we want…so, lovely actors. make yourselves be known to the world with a simple click. (that would be your website.) and let yourselves be reachable at any time of the day or nite for email… don’t let what happened to those who were NOT prepared bite you in the butt as well…

my next blog is going give you the names and descriptions of the ONLY website master and photographer that i ever send my students to… they rock… tune in!!!!

that’s all for now!

yes, i blog for two (and only two) sites. mine, and mike’s of newyorkacting.com. there, you’ll find hot tips on the auditioning process, what to wear (and what NOT to) doing your homework when it comes to finding a new coach or producer of your vo demo reels, classes, my tried-and-true technique of F,F,S, range, branding yourself, commercial and voice-over classes, and the friggin’ list goes on. i’ll be blogging here as well, so feel free to click on both.

today i had a long casting session. i cast at phantom here in nyc (http://www.phantomaudio.com) for the voice for a big campaign. not an easy task, as the talent (as always) was amazing, but the clients weren’t sure which direction to go in. and as this voice will be the voice of a huge campaign, AND the voice of an animated creature, it was tough… it’s so much easier when there’s a specific direction – the voice of a human…

kudos to my students who came in and nailed it, though. made me proud, for sure. it’ll be interesting for SURE who books it. the copy was amazing, which helped a ton – three very well written, very witty spots. whoever books it is sure gonna have fun in the studio…and for those students who sat with me and watched the process – for damn near the whole session, good for you. what a way to learn…a gift i get at casting where i cast, and a gift i can give to all my “kids”. i’m lucky to be able to have you guys there in with me while i cast…. oooooh, lucky me, lucky you!

When the power goes out after a powerful storm
in a small town in the Florida panhandle,
Wanna June Duke is determined to en joy
a languid evening under the stars by
the light of the full moon. But her son
Roy Boy picks up (literally) their persnickety

okay…it seems like folks are coming to me in droves lately. dunno. new “school year”?

here’s what i’m getting, and it’s getting me down: people are coming to me after having spent waaaaayyyyy too much money with coaches who a. have no real connection to this industry, but are full of great hype b. have no business “producing” demos, when they’ve never even recorded or edited a single spot for air – let alone a national spot and c. SAY that they’re successful vo artists, when in fact, they’re not. this get’s me fumed, i have to admit.

as a new york casting director, i know who walks through my doors. i know if i’ve never seen these people (or HARDLY ever seen them) in my 15 years of casting, and i know what a competitive demo is supposed to sound like. and what i’m hearing, AINT great. not good at all. furthermore, a lot of these “coaches” and “producers” are charging waaaay too much for these lessons, and these terrible demos.

i used to think “hey. it’s a means to an end for these folks. it’s not my problem if people don’t do their homework and really research these ‘professionals’.” but it seems to becoming more and more my problem, as more and more people come to me with not great experiences, and demos that need to be edited and manipulated at the very least… or completely re-worked.

so, actors. PLEASE do your homework. do your research. whoever you choose, know that you made a choice NOT based on hype, or slick adveritsing. cuz in the end, it’s only gonna waste your precious time, and your precious dinero… that’s all for now…

okay…it seems like folks are coming to me in droves lately. dunno. new “school year”?

here’s what i’m getting, and it’s getting me down: people are coming to me after having spent waaaaayyyyy too much money with coaches who a. have no real connection to this industry, but are full of great hype b. have no business “producing” demos, when they’ve never even recorded or edited a single spot for air – let alone a national spot and c.
